EDINBURG — Authorities in South Texas are investigating the suicide of an inmate in the city jail who apparently killed himself by swallowing wet toilet paper.
Police found Joel de la Rosa, 18, dead early Thursday in the jail in Edinburg, near the Texas-Mexico border. He had been taken into custody about three hours earlier on charges of drug possession and evading arrest.
Officials said de la Rosa was jailed earlier this month and tried to hang himself in his cell. Officers were able to stop him in time.
Police Chief Quirino Munoz said de la Rosa received no special attention this time, despite the earlier suicide attempt.
The Hidalgo County sheriff's department is investigating the death.
